Carmeuse Lime & Stone is the largest supplier of lime and lime related technology in North America. Volume, however, is not our only strength. The quality of our products meets or exceeds the exacting chemical and physical standards that are applied to the production of lime. This has resulted in Carmeuse Lime & Stone being recognized as an industry leader. These dual attributes, volume and quality, enable Carmeuse Lime & Stone to serve multiple markets with a variety of environmental and industrial applications.

The primary markets served by Carmeuse Lime & Stone are:

  • Steel Industry: Lime is used in the process of converting iron ore into pig iron. Lime is also used as a fluxing agent in Electric Arc Furnaces and Basic Oxygen Furnaces to bind impurities from the steel being manufactured and to maintain the refractory life of the furnaces.

  • Flue Gas Desulfurization: Lime is used to reduce S02 emissions and "other acid gases". In this application, lime is essential to environmental protection.

  • Road Construction Industry: Lime provides highly cost effective and time saving benefits in the soil stabilization process in road construction. These benefits include plasticity reduction, quick drying times, swell reduction, and improved stability and compaction. Lime is also a highly efficient and cost effective additive in asphalt mixtures. Lime enables reduced rutting, slower age rate, reduced cracking, and excellent anti-stripping qualities.

  • Water and Waste Treatment: Lime is widely used in the treatment of drinking water. These uses include the adjustment of the pH of water that is too acidic, adding minerals back into water that is too soft to combat corrosion in water conduits, and to soften water that is too hard. Lime is also essential in the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater. Uses include: (1) adjustment of the pH of water that is too acidic; (2) the removal of colloidal matter from wastewater via lime as a coagulant and flocculation agent; (3) raising the pH of waste water to a level where dissolved metals are rendered insoluble and precipitate in the form of metal hydroxide; (4) precipitating phosphates, sulphates and fluorides in the form of insoluble calcium salts that can be recovered: and (5) stabilizing and de-watering waste sludge, making it suitable for use as fertilizers, or safe for landfill disposal.

  • Paper Industry: Lime is used as a filler and bleaching agent in paper production. Several production processes utilize lime including: (1) the production of pulp; (2) as a flocculating agent to neutralize and clarify residual water; and (3) as a bleaching agent.

  • Chemical Industry: Lime or hydrated lime is the most economical and widely used alkaline reagent in the chemical industry. Its uses include: (1) a reagent in the manufacture of various calcic compounds, both mineral and organic: (2) pH control in neutralizing or reducing acidity; (3) regenerate more costly reagents; and (4) the coagulation and flocculation of colloidal impurities.
