Carmeuse Employees Thrive at Mine Rescue Competition

From July 23-26, Carmeuse created four teams who took place in the 2018 Metal/Nonmetal National Mine Rescue Competition at the Heritage Center in Lexington, KY.

The event featured more than 32 teams across the United States. Teams representing Carmeuse included the Black River Bandits, Georgia Team Thunder, Luttrell Rangers and Maysville Raiders. In the contest, Dan Mero and Heath Gulley placed first in Technician Team Bio-Marine BioPak 240 and first place overall in the Technician Team Individual category. In an impressive display of mine rescue knowledge, Anthony Payne, Dan Mero, Terry Highfield and Ren Ramer all had perfect scores on the field test.

Kenny Heater has trained and served on various
mine rescue projects and has been a mentor for
many rescuers

One of the highlights of the event was Kenny Heater being honored and inducted into the Mine Rescue Hall of Fame. For the past 38 years, Kenny has been heavily involved in mine rescue and has solved issues involving fires, roof falls, gas, water, structural failure, electrical hazards and victim recovery.

The national competition is held every other year at a different location. National competitions are designed for teams to learn, execute and maintain required mine site emergency rescue skills for trapped or injured miners. Challenges in the national competition included a written skills test, hands-on and written first aid tests, hypothetical problem-solving and a timed mock rescue observed by a panel of judges.
