Pellets Production

Pellet Production- Low grade iron ore such as taconite can be improved for use in the blast furnace by concentrating the iron ore and forming a pellet with pulverized chemical grade limestone (fluxed pellet). These pellets are spherical (1/3” to 3.4” in size).  After they have been heated to 2,400oF where they are sintered to form a hard sphere and cooled. They are shipped to the steel plant for use in the blast furnace.

  • High Calcium Chemical Grade Limestone – High quality limestone for the pellet production process is crushed  to about 1/2" in size for blending with the pulverized iron ore. Consistency in chemistry with CaCO3 analysis typically 97.6%.
  • Dolomitic Chemical Grade Limestone - High quality limestone for the pellet production process is crushed  to about 1/2" in size for blending with the pulverized iron ore. Dolomitic limestone is often used in this process also.
