Alternate Iron Making Process

Alternate Ironmaking Processes – EAF shops have utilized new Ironmaking technologies to supplement the scrap used in melting. These processes utilized crushed limestone to provide either a liquid iron product or solid iron nodule to improve the residual levels of the finished steel products. Alternate iron processes such as the ITMK3 (Mesabi Nuggets), Fastox, HIsmelt, and FINEX require the use of chemical grade limestone to form the slag for removal of impurities related to the iron ore used.

  • High Calcium Chemical Grade Limestone – High quality limestone for the alternate iron processes is typically a crushed product with consistency in sizing and chemistry with CaCO3 analysis typically 97.6%. 
  • Dolomitic Chemical Grade Limestone - High quality limestone for the alternate iron production process is crushed  to about 1/4" in size for blending with the pulverized iron ore. Dolomitic limestone is often used in this process also
